About the album

Amongst the seventeenth-century harpsichord repertoire, the genre of pieces referring to a loss, whether or not the death of a person, takes a special place, and forms the leitmotif of this disc. These introspective pieces, actually being meditations or contemplations, achieve in a uniquely profound way an almost spiritual level. This recording by harpsichordist Ewald Demeyere includes, amongst others, settings of Dowland’s famous Lachrymae by Byrd and the rather unknown Melchior Schildt, a student of Sweelinck.

Ewald Demeyere (harpsichord)

Harpsichordist Ewald Demeyere believes that conveying the emotional content of a composition is a musician’s most important task. Since each period has its specifics, however, he intends to combine emotion with historical keyboard technique and performance practice in such a way as to obtain as captivating an interpretation as possible. Demeyere’s research, which, among others, resulted in a PhD and the publication of a book Johann Sebastian Bach’s Art of Fugue—Performance Practice Based on German Eighteenth-Century Theory (2013), is never an end in itself but always has to serve the eloquence of the musical performance. Demeyere has taken part in more than 100 CD recordings, many of which with chamber and solo repertoire. As a player of chamber music, Demeyere...

He was a jury member for the Paola Bernardi International Harpsichord Competition in 2013 in Bologna. In 2018, he won the CPEB:CW Counterpoint Contest, with a unanimous verdict from the jury that his Ricercar a 5 per Cembalo was “the most accomplished and natural in its flow”.

William Byrd

William Byrd was an English composer. He was one of the greatest composers of his generation. Hiis name is sometimes spelled as Bird, Byrde, or Byred. The exact dates of his birth and death are not known, and even his place of birth (Lincoln) is merely guesswork, based on the fact that several families named Byrd lived in Lincolnshire during the 17th century.  As a child, Byrd received music lessons from the renowned Thomas Tallis in the Chapel Royal in London. Byrd is part of the so-called virginalists. In 1563, he was appointed as organist of the cathedral in Lincoln, even though he must have only been around 20 years old and in 1572 he was appointed as organist of Chapel Royal...

In 1563, he was appointed as organist of the cathedral in Lincoln, even though he must have only been around 20 years old and in 1572 he was appointed as organist of Chapel Royal together with Tallis. In 1575, again with Tallis, he received the rights to publish and sell his music by Queen Elizabeth I. In honour of the Queen, the two composers dedicated their Cantiones Sacrae in the same year.
On multiple occasions, Byrd was prosecuted in court. As a catholic, he was repeatedly prosecuted for the rejection of Anglicanism. Nonetheless, he remained in favour of the Queen, probably because he composed music for both religious branches. Moreover, he wrote both secular and sacred music, and both vocal and instrumental pieces.

(...) this is a fascinatingly fine programme, eruditely chosen and fervently prtrayed.
Gramophone, 01-5-2014

This release, with its startlingly vivid ‘demonstration’ recorded sound and admirably executed concept, is something towards which lovers of well-played harpsichord and early keyboard music can gravitate with confidence.
MusicWeb-international, 15-1-2014

"Play this disc and the busy world recedes, giving way to the music's measured expression which slows the heartbeat and takes over the mind. Highly recommended. Listening to this carefully selected and lovingly recreated music."
